U SPORTS Top 10 (Sept. 26, 2023): Gryphon Rugby, Cross Country Featured in Latest National Rankings

TORONTO, Ont. – On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the U SPORTS office released is latest national rankings for the 2023-24 season. Three Gryphon varsity teams were represented on the latest rankings, with women’s rugby and both cross country teams holding their positions in their respective Top 10’s.Gryphons Cross Country – No. 4

Following the Gryphons season opening meet this past weekend in London, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams remain at their previous ranking of No. 4. On the men’s side the GRyphons had a stong outting at the Western Invitational, finishin third in the team standings thanks largely to an impressive first performance from Nicholas Bannon, who crossed the finish line first with a time of 25:05.0. Teammate MAx Davies finished just a few minutes behind Bannon in 4th with a time of 25:13.2. On the women’s side the team was led by Cameron Ormond who finished just off the podium in fourth with a time of 30:01.5.Julia Agonstinelli was next fastest Gryphon coming in 17th to help the Gryphons place sixth in the team standings. The Gryphons will now head to Waterloo for the Don Mills Open and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the Paul short Run, with both events taking place this Saturday (Sept. 30).

Gryphons Women’s Rugby – No. 5

The Gryphons women’s rugby team falls one position in the latest rankings after falling to the now No. 2-ranked Queen’s Gaels this past weekend in a hard-fought 25-20 match. In another physical, low scoring affair between the two perennial OUA powerhouses, the Gryphons led the Gaels 20-18 with just over a minute to play before the home team broke away for a late try and convert to secure the win. The Gryphons will now look to finish off the season strong with a pair of matches against the No. 9-ranked Western Mustangs (Oct. 1) and the York Lions (Oct. 7) before the start pf the OUA playoffs on October 14.
