With demand for self-defence classes on the rise in Guelph, one local instructor is working to make training more accessible—especially for girls and young women.

Amanda McAlpine, a martial artist and lead instructor at Tri-City Training, is offering workshops and courses designed to give participants the tools and confidence they need to stay safe in everyday situations.

“Do you want your daughters or granddaughters to feel prepared and empowered?” McAlpine asks. “These skills aren’t just for emergencies—they build awareness and confidence for daily life.”

Recent local news stories and police alerts have prompted many in the community to explore self-defence options. In response, McAlpine is expanding her offerings and encouraging more families to take that first step toward personal safety education.
