Public and Catholic schools across Dufferin County, including Orangeville, Wellington County, and Guelph, are set to close soon for the winter break.

The last day of school for students attending the Upper Grand District School Board, Wellington Catholic District School Board, and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will be Friday, December 20. Classes will resume on Monday, January 6.

A Reminder for Drivers

With schools closed, children will have more free time and may be outdoors playing in the snow. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially in school zones, residential neighborhoods, and other areas where children may be present.

“Drivers should not rely on a child’s knowledge of traffic laws, so expect the unexpected,” the Government of Ontario advises on its website. For instance, children might dart out from between parked cars or attempt to cross streets without looking for traffic.

Tips for Safe Driving During the Break

  • Drive slowly and cautiously: Be extra vigilant in areas where children are likely to play or walk.
  • Expect reduced visibility at twilight: Children might still be outdoors, but lower light levels can make them harder to spot.

By staying alert and careful, drivers can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy winter break.
