After four years of extensive renovations, Guelph’s oldest bar is making its triumphant return. History enthusiasts and regular bar-goers alike can rejoice as the main floor bar reopens on weekends at the iconic Albion, located at 49 Norfolk St.

Owner Thomas Gofton shared his heartfelt gratitude: “There are so many incredible people that worked endlessly to get this place to finally open. I’ll be repaying for a long time.” He humorously added that he might be ready to collapse when the first keg is tapped—a nod to the hard work and dedication poured into the project.

The grand opening is set for March 14 to 17, culminating on St. Patrick’s Day with a Roaring 20’s celebration. Meanwhile, the Albion’s second floor will continue to dazzle guests with a variety of events, including comedy nights, karaoke, drag shows, salsa dancing, and live concerts. Manager Aaron Soch noted, “Comics and queens come from all over the province to test their material and/or give a good show,” highlighting the dynamic energy that defines the venue.

Looking ahead, plans are already in place to expand the Albion’s offerings. The main floor will soon be open during the week, and future enhancements include reopening patios, introducing lunch and coffee services, and launching a weekend brunch. This comprehensive approach aims to blend the bar’s storied past with modern trends.

In addition to its revamped main floor, the upstairs event space, which opened first, remains a popular destination. Patrons can now also explore the first-floor bar and restaurant, “Tales and Cocktails.” Inspired by the New York Gatsby era, this new dining area will feature Parisian-style mains alongside an expanding selection of wines, scotch, local beers, and more.

As the Albion prepares to reopen its doors, one can’t help but wonder: Could this revival herald a new golden age for Guelph’s nightlife? With passion, history, and a dash of good fortune, the Albion’s lucky opening weekend promises to be an event to remember.
