The long-awaited provincial funding commitment has been secured, marking a significant milestone for Guelph and Wellington’s chronically unhoused population. Nearly three dozen residents are poised to find stability with the announcement of $9 million allocated over three years, a pivotal part of the 2024 provincial budget unveiled on Monday. This funding will fuel the development of permanent supportive housing and comprehensive wrap-around services at the innovative 10 Shelldale project, a collaborative effort led by Kindle Communities, the Guelph Community Health Centre, and Stonehenge Therapeutic Community (STC).
Melissa Kwiatkowski, CEO of Guelph CHC, expressed her gratitude in a news release, stating, “This funding is the last critical piece of the puzzle to making this innovative project successful. I am grateful for the support and recognition of the government, and particularly Minister (Sylvia) Jones, for recognizing the importance of this project and making this investment in our community.”
With operational funding secured, the project is now on track to open its doors to the 32-unit facility located at 10 Shelldale Cres. in the Onward Willow neighbourhood by June.
The design ensures each unit is a minimum of 400 square feet, spanning the second through fifth storeys, while the ground level will feature common amenity spaces and office areas.
Crucially, the project will provide on-site support services around the clock, catering to mental health and addictions issues among other needs. This holistic approach aims to create a supportive environment that fosters long-term stability and well-being for residents.
