Advance polls for Ontario’s snap election opened Thursday morning, giving voters a chance to cast their ballots ahead of election day next week.

Due to the early election call, Elections Ontario is offering fewer advance voting days than in previous elections. Voters who wish to cast their ballots early can do so on February 20, 21, or 22 at designated advance polling locations. A full list of locations is available on the Elections Ontario website.

Ontario’s First Winter Election in Over a Century

This marks Ontario’s first winter election since 1883, according to Elections Ontario. Coincidentally, both that election and this year’s vote share the same February 27 election date.

With the threat of winter storms and freezing temperatures potentially affecting voter turnout, Elections Ontario has put contingency plans in place to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot.

“We’re going to work very closely to ensure every Ontarian has an easy way to exercise their right to vote,” said Greg Essensa, CEO of Elections Ontario, on the first day of the campaign.

Advance Voting Period Shortened

Unlike a standard election, which offers 10 days of advance polling, this snap election allows only three days of early voting. The reduction follows rules set by Ontario’s election legislation, which dictate shorter advance polling periods in snap election scenarios.

With a tight timeline and potential weather challenges, Elections Ontario continues to encourage voters to plan ahead and take advantage of advance voting options before election day on February 27.
