In Fergus, Ontario, Jackie Charlebois has dedicated herself to rescuing and rehabilitating Shiba Inus, a distinctive and ancient Japanese breed. As the coordinator and owner of Shiba Rescue GTA, she has cared for and rehomed over 860 dogs, offering them a fresh start and a second chance at life.
A Rare and Resilient Breed
The Shiba Inu, known for its fox-like features and confident personality, has a storied history. Nearly driven to extinction during World War II, the breed has made a remarkable comeback. These muscular, agile hunting dogs typically weigh between 18 to 24 pounds and come in various colors, including red, red sesame, and black and tan, all with distinctive white markings.
A Passion Sparked by Fate
Charlebois’s journey into Shiba Inu rescue began unexpectedly. During a beach walk with her husky, she encountered a small, spirited black and tan dog that resembled a miniature husky. That dog, a Shiba Inu, captivated her, leading her to establish Shiba Rescue GTA and devote herself to the breed’s welfare.
Making a Lasting Impact
Through her tireless work, Charlebois has matched countless Shibas with loving families, ensuring they receive the care, training, and attention they deserve. Her story is a testament to the power of breed-specific rescues and how one person’s dedication can transform the lives of both dogs and their adopters.
