Knowing how you learn, work, creatKnowing how you learn, work, create and see things is a blessing, according to one Guelph artist. Patti Collins, a retired teacher and life-long creative, said she doesn’t fit any typical profile. She has always experimented with different types of art, using many styles and techniques, and said when she gets bored of something she just moves on to something new. This is likely due to a later-in-life diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

She said being “labelled” has made a world of difference in her life and she loves it. At 75, she has a deeper understanding of how she works best and pushes through obstacles.

“It explains everything,” she said. “You can see it all the way back. I’m just so pleased that there’s something I can refer to now.”

As a parent and as an educator, Collins took special interest in the varied abilities of everyone around her and focused on creating techniques and strategies for learning that broke the regular mould. She said sometimes it was messy and difficult but always rewarding. Her experience taught her to look within herself.
