Spring is here, and with it comes the return of Canada geese to Guelph. As the birds return to their nesting grounds, it’s important to understand their behavior and take steps to safely share space with them. The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is offering guidance on how to coexist with these magnificent creatures as they settle in for the season.

During nesting season, geese can be protective of their territory, especially when they have eggs or young goslings nearby. While their behavior may seem aggressive, it’s all part of their instinct to protect their young. It’s also important to note that disturbing or attempting to move geese, or interfering with their nests, is illegal under wildlife protection laws.

The GHS encourages residents to embrace the opportunity to observe these birds, who often return to the same spots year after year. Their return serves as a beautiful reminder of the wildlife that exists even in the heart of our urban spaces.

1. Give them space – Keep a safe distance from geese, especially if they appear protective or are with their young.

2. Stay calm – If a goose seems agitated, avoid making sudden movements or loud noises that could escalate the situation.

3. Respect their nesting areas – Avoid disturbing nests and try to stay clear of known nesting locations.

4. Report concerns – If you encounter a situation where geese are in danger or pose a threat, contact local wildlife authorities for assistance.

By following these simple guidelines, residents can safely enjoy the beauty of nature while respecting the wildlife that shares our city.
