GOOD Games Organizers Voice Frustration Over Lack of City Support

The organizers behind the GOOD Games have expressed their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as inadequate support from the city for their summer event.

Funding Challenges and Advocacy

During a recent committee meeting, Helen Stoumbos, the founder of GOOD Games, raised the issue of financial support for the event. She inquired about the possibility of utilizing funds from the municipal accommodation tax (MAT) to bolster the event’s resources.

The MAT, which accumulates revenue from overnight hotel stays, has amassed $1.2 million since its inception just over a year ago. However, despite this financial pool, the GOOD Games feel overlooked in terms of support.

The Significance of GOOD Games

The GOOD Games, known for being a free multi-sport event and festival, draws athletes and festival-goers alike. Its inception in 2019 has seen a steady increase in participation, with this year’s event expected to attract 1,500 athletes and 15,000 attendees.

Advocacy Efforts and Challenges

While the council unanimously supported the administration policy regarding MAT funding programs, the allocation of funds remains undecided. GOOD Games advocates argue that their event’s reach extends beyond Ontario, attracting athletes from the U.S. and necessitating hotel accommodations, thus justifying a share of MAT revenue.

Seeking Collaboration and Support

Stoumbos emphasized the need for not just financial assistance but also logistical support from the city. She highlighted the significant investments of time, energy, and capital required to orchestrate such events.

Addressing Frustrations and Seeking Understanding

In response to concerns about the event’s perceived lack of support, Coun. Phil Allt sought to understand the root of these frustrations. Mike Jean, the chief marketing officer for GOOD Games, noted previous adversarial encounters and questioned the utilization of MAT funds given the substantial revenue collected.

A Plea for Recognition and Assistance

Despite the challenges, Stoumbos reiterated her love for the city and her commitment to enhancing its cultural and sporting landscape through events like GOOD Games. The event’s growth trajectory underscores its potential, contingent on adequate support.

Exploring Funding Models

Mayor Cam Guthrie acknowledged the need for further discussions regarding funding and support for events like GOOD Games. He anticipated ongoing conversations and potential avenues for collaboration moving forward.

Conclusion

As of now, discussions have not resulted in direct financial support for GOOD Games from the City of Guelph. However, the dialogue underscores the importance of recognizing and nurturing community-driven initiatives that contribute to the city’s vibrancy and cultural richness.
