Theresa McGeragle steps into big running shoes as the new organizer of Guelph’s annual Terry Fox Run, succeeding the esteemed David Picard. With a passion for keeping Terry Fox’s legacy alive, McGeragle aims to continue the tradition that has inspired her for over a decade.
Continuing a Legacy of Inspiration
“After participating in the run for more than 10 years, Terry Fox has become a significant personal inspiration,” McGeragle shared. “His determination and resilience during his own journey constantly motivate me to push forward without complaint.”
A Collaborative Effort to Keep the Spirit Alive
Upon learning that the Guelph Terry Fox Run faced uncertainty without a dedicated organizer, McGeragle swiftly stepped in. “With 40 years of history in Guelph, my priority was ensuring the run’s continuity. I’m thrilled to take on this role, and many volunteers have expressed interest, showing that this is a community effort,” she emphasized.
Passing the Baton: Honoring Decades of Commitment
David Picard, a stalwart in Guelph’s Terry Fox community, has organized the run for over 34 years. Reflecting on his journey, Picard shared, “Terry Fox was my inspiration to start running marathons. His example spurred me on, and I’ve been deeply involved since the 1980s.”
Embracing Change and Growth
Picard’s decision to step back from organizing the run comes with a sense of passing the baton to new leadership. “Theresa’s enthusiasm is exactly what this event needs. I’ll still be involved but in a more supportive role,” he noted.
Uniting for a Cause
The Terry Fox Run holds profound personal significance for Picard, particularly after losing his father to cancer in 2005. “Terry Fox’s mission to fund cancer research resonates deeply. It’s not just about raising money; it’s about honoring his legacy and the lives touched by cancer,” Picard emphasized.
Inspiring Future Generations
As a schoolteacher, McGeragle finds joy in sharing Terry Fox’s story with her students. “Cancer touches so many lives, and teaching about Terry Fox helps children understand the importance of resilience and community support,” she explained.
Looking Ahead: Building on Success
With the upcoming run, McGeragle’s goal is to increase participation and awareness. “Last year’s virtual run had a good turnout, but I aim to surpass previous in-person participant numbers,” she shared.
Everyone’s Welcome: A Celebration of Positivity
McGeragle emphasizes that the Terry Fox Run is inclusive, welcoming walkers, roller bladers, cyclists, and supporters of all ages. “Terry Fox symbolizes positivity, determination, and courage, qualities we all aspire to,” she remarked.
Save the Date: Terry Fox Run 2024
